There's nothing quite as heartbreaking as seeing a child who has just had a parent say disrespectful comments to them. Parents often think that children will just brush off such comments: "He knows I didn't mean it." But kids don't work that way. Every word you say places a mark on your child's self-concept. It's OK to be firm. It's OK to be direct. But it's never OK to crush a child's spirit.
